Puma presents: Of The Same Earth

“Artist Kehinde Wiley and PUMA jointly commemorated the Africa Cup of Nations 2010 with a series of artwork and products culminating with the PUMA Africa Unity Kit. In a video capturing the background of the project, the American artist took a trip to Africa to gather inspiration and converse with some of Africa’s biggest footballing superstars, Samuel Eto’o, Emmanuel Eboué and John Mensah. The journey includes a compelling look into the process of creating behind traditional African patterns, as well as strong aspects of Africa’s cultural landscape, such as music. The Africa Cup of Nations 2010 will conclude with a championship match featuring Ghana and Egypt on January 31st, 2010.” by Eugene Kan.

Epic Soft Balls

Since joining The Ringleaders last fall, Ian Kennedy has really helped the club, both on and off the field. His offensive awareness is a force to be reckoned with. The streets call him Saucemang.

Ian posted this on Tiger Distribution the other day:

Swedish designer Klas Ernflo is the dude behind THIS Rad project!

Best Dressed Men in Football

I was talking to Vince a few weeks ago about Pep Guardiola. As far as style, forget Beckham, Pep is the real deal. As far as football, Pep is the future. First time I saw him play was during World Cup’94. After that, since there wasn’t any football on Canadian Television, Pep and many others faded.

Vince again, introduced me to Shimon aka SFC. Homeboy is into fashion and football.

“This section is where the sartorial side of football kicks in. Jose Mourinho, the often controversial but often victorious skipper established a name for himself by winning the Champions League with FC Porto – a considerate underdog in the competition – and his dominance in the English game during his three year tenure at Chelsea. His counterpart, Pep Guardiola is a relatively new face among the coaching profession but his name graced the pages of Spanish press during the 90’s as he spent over a decade donning the red and blue stripes of Barcelona. As both men continue their journey this season to capture their second Champions League titles they will do so in style.”

Gustavo

I’ve been cruising on Derived Thread, Johnny’s site, you know.

Interesting enough, Luca has his thing going on there too. I checked Gustavo’s recent trip to New York and saw this little magnet of Maradona.

A few things you should know about Gustavo:

-He’s a good kid. He’s from Paraguay.
-Paraguay will face Italy during this summer’s World Cup. If Italy loses the match, then Maura will punch Gustavo in the face.
-Gustavo should be playing soccer. The Ringleaders should sign him.
-Gustavo got me a World Cup 1994 official GREECE snap back cap, mint condition.

Week 11

Division C

The RFC looked confident, blessing the pitch once again. With the league playoffs right around the corner, every match, every point counts.

Vincent Tsang is definitely improving as the weeks go by, and today was no exception. A relentless effort in the midfield brought much inspiration to the team.

It’s also worth a mention as defensive center back and captain Nick saved a goal on the line, clearing the ball at the very last second.

The dynamic Trepanier duo impressed once again, as a one-two play found Jonas all alone on the opposite side. RFC won 1-0.

Division B

In much frustration, and after many weeks, we still haven’t got over this loss. We’ve played much better football because we’ve proved it to ourselves. Or maybe College Lasalle wanted it more than us. The match ended 3-1 in their favor.

Please note that the referee awarded a questionable penalty shot that cost us the match. Then again, this will sound like an excuse. It’s not an excuse was you’re on the pitch, sweating, bleeding, battered and bruised, exhausted as your lungs are punching through your chest gasping for air.

The number 10

Talking with Dr. Football yesterday about the “old days”. Complaining actually, how clubs nowadays just sign players in order to sell jerseys. The same player plays a few months and then transfers elsewhere. The jersey you bought? Well, almost goes to waste since the name printed on the back means nothing. Not to you, not to the fans, not to the club’s history either.

Playing in my village in Greece was an early life experience I deeply miss. All we cared about was the number 10 jersey, and playing the best we could possibly play. You see back then, clubs weren’t really promoting their stars that much. It was the people promoting them, on the stands, in the bars, and the youth on the street.

This is my very first “soccer jersey”, my beloved team Olympiakos. Yup, it’s a bootleg, bought on the block for most probably 20$. It meant everything to me, it changed my whole life. I felt strong, confident, I could dribble anyone, score from anywhere. At certain times I could be Pele. At other times I could be Maradona.

No photoshop tricks here, just raw photos. I’ll be doing more of these. Pour out my feelings about things… keep it raw. And I made sure the little carpet appeared on the right side there.

Head start…

Ringleader Dan Marrett (first on the photo starting form the right) was featured in a Red Bull Formula 1 commercial today. After missing both week 9 matches, he was spotted by several members of the team, sporting a light grey WESC hoody and a blue Penfield tuque.

“I was getting ready for Frostbite Cup 2010… just warming up…” said Dan Marrett. The tournament kicks off Saturday, the 6th of March.

Maradona earring sells for £22,000

“The white gold earring, which came with a copy of a police charge sheet with Maradona’s signature, was bought by a woman with a Neapolitan accent at an auction in Bolzano, in north-eastern Italy.

She declined to give her name but said she was “satisfied” with the purchase, before being ushered into a lift by a bodyguard.”

Popularity rising? Indeed. Reed up.

Week 10

Division B

RFC 2 was feeling pretty good that day, once the whistle blew for the start of the match, it was a whole other story. Unbelievable but true, The Ringleaders were losing 2-0 after 4 minutes of play.

It was time to rally the troops and put some pressure on now 2 year old arch rivals FC Lachine.

The plan started working. After numerous pressured attacks, throw inns and corner kicks, Ian picked a rebound and nailed his first goal of the season.

Fc Lachine somehow collapsed, though the final scoreline doesn’t represent the outcome and events. Early in the second half, Laurent ran up from midfield beating his defense men. In a lovely effort, he chipped the ball past the keeper and made it a 2-2 tie.

Danny was unstoppable and quite a monstrous  nightmare for his opponents. He scored 3 goals including a superb and unforgettable “Bicycle Kick” Even Fc Lachine players applauded his exploit.

The match ended 5-4 in RFC’s favor.

Division C

Just lovely, to fight till the end. We lost an important match with our heads up. Brossard Blues Keeper robbed us many times, including a header by Bart Graziana that crossed the goal line. The referee never saw it.

Final score was 2-1. A remarkable performance by the defense. Besides those 5 bad minutes where we allowed 2 goals back to back, RFC picked up the pace, feeding the midfield and organizing attacks.

Five bad minutes… that’s football.

One Shot!

Belgium’s gallery space, B.P.S.22 has scheduled an exhibitions dedicated to football and contemporary art. “One Shot” brings out the relationship that current artists hold with the world of football. There will be two works that illustrate the gradual installation of football media – a video portrait of Zidane by Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parrione and a video portrait of George Best by Hellmuth Costard.

According to the press conference release, “between these two filmed works, more than thirty years have passed, marked by fundamental changes in the world, for which the exhibition presented at the B.P.S.22 is intended to be an echo through works which approach or question football and its connections.”
