Week 14 -The Gold Rush 2010

Division 5 written by Angelo

A crucial match and a much needed victory here. Because after today, there’s only one game left, and we must make the playoffs. So we marched to the Soccerplex very positive and confident that we can get our 3 points.

Coach Maillet was present for the occasion and had a perfect game plan set up. And it all seemed too real as the whistle blew. Right from the kick off, Edwin sent a ridiculous splitting ball to Davis, which to his surprise, put him one-on-one against the Footballers’s goalkeeper. The ball went wide, but a great break with only a few seconds in the game! It felt good so we kept pressing!

The Ringleaders had an amazing first half. Bart was really on his game, considering the fact that he party all night dancing till the early morning. Black was first on the ball, with some fluid exchanges in the midfield, Rob, Ian, Edwin, Raj… some lovely footwork indeed. The “D” line was also implicated in the program, as Bobby, Nick and Patterson took some great runs and placed good attacks in their efforts to support the mids.

The offensive line was super charged, but caught offside on almost every play! It was quite frustrating as we disagreed with the referee, but we stayed humble and played on.

Right before half time, Dan Marrett took a great shot from outside the box, and with all that rain, hitting it low and clever he did. The keeper stopped it, and JB was unlucky on his rebound to finish. A big opportunity for The Ringleaders, but the scored stayed 0-0 at the break.

The tactics switched for the 2nd half, as coach Maillet insisted on the importance of scoring a goal. Hence, we played with 3 defensemen in the back. Fatigue however, creeped up like a uninvited guest. The Footballers FC came out aggressive, with a more suicidal kick-and-go kind of style. That meant we had to run up and down over and over again.

One thing for sure, as Davis mentioned in the car on the way to the pitch, is that he hadn’t scored a goal while Thanasi (aka Dr. Football) is present at our games. Tonight was no different I’m afraid. Our top scorer couldn’t find the back of the net. We must break that curse and we will damn it!

Time was running out, and still no luck; 0-0 with only a few minutes left. We must say every RFCer was on top of his game and in full form. With coach Maillet directing on the side lines, delegating on positioning and substitutions, we stayed organized till the end.

A memorable exchange between Jonas and I. Early in the 2nd half, after the Footballers sent a long ball (you guessed it), Jonas miss judged it as it bounced over his head and kept on going. Don’t forget the rain was on and off, and on turf, that’s most likely to happen often. But I read the play and made it back on time, heading the ball clear and out for a corner. Well, it was Jonas’s turn to save me. With only seconds to go, a long ball again, catching me off guard, let our opponents on a break away. I ran as fast as I could, nervous and embarrassed, and as it seemed like the heart breaker was to happen, Jonas pulled a miracle save, coming out to the edge of his box grabbing the ball from underneath his opponent and clearing the danger.

I was in bed, and even though the game ended 0-0, I was still smiling, thinking about that save.

(Jonas, Patterson, Morgan, Angelo, Bobby, Nick (c), Edwin, Rob, Bart, Victor, Marrett, Ian, JB, Naz, Davis, Raj were The Ringleaders today)

Week 4 – The Gold Rush 2010

Division 5 by Angelo

After a long 2 week break, The Ringleaders were back on the pitch. Everything felt right, the weather wasn’t the greatest and the pitch slippery as usual. We couldn’t get the ball right either…

From the kick off whistle, we rarely lost control. All positions were maintained and we followed our game plan till the end. At the 12th minute, a lob shot from Footballers FC midfielder beat Jonas, who with the sun in his eyes, had absolutely no chance of saving it. “We just get scored unexpected goals all the time. Like we don’t see them coming…” said RFC forward Jb.

As a player that holds the center defense, we honestly don’t make that many mistakes. But this season so far, feels like we pay for each and every one of them.

The Ringleaders did something I will never forget. Before the match, the boys made an amazing gift of a varsity custom Ringleaders Letterman jacket with my name on it. I got very emotional hahahaha!!! So at the start of the 2nd half, Footballers FC launched an attack through the middle, that left me and the forward with the ball. In an attempt to clear the play, I felt like I did a legal shoulder to shoulder contact for the action. The referee thought otherwise, as he whistled for a penalty. I didn’t argue but told the Ref how I felt. Deep down inside, I knew Jonas would save the penalty shot so I zipped my mouth, and watched him save the ball.

At still 1-0 down, we kept the pressure. Clearing the back, handling the middle and pressing forward. I’d say Ian was outstanding, and definitely the man of the match. He was everywhere, always first on the ball, with an offensive pulse, and had 3 good chances to score. Hats off Mr. Kennedy.

The Ringleaders had a great opportunity to tie the match, as Ian got a corner kick to the 2nd post, where Jeremie aka Big Nou beat his marker and headed the ball just a few inches of the net. “I was just a little too far from the goal, I should of headed to the front of the net, but thought I had a chance to score” said Big Nou.

With less than 10 minutes to go, Footballers FC scored their 2nd goal and sealed the deal.

The Ringleaders marched off the field with their heads up. It’s early in the season, and we believe we can turn things around.

Next match is Sunday, June 13th at 11am. Stay tuned.

(Jonas, Patterson, Paul, Angelo, Jano, Kevin, Luca, Edwin, Max, Yvan, Jackson, Ian, JB, Bart, Naz, Sirois, Big Nou were The Ringleaders today)

Guillermo Mordillo

I put his name in the title, and I’ll repeat it again, Guillermo Mordillo! My elementary school library carried his book “Le Foot”. The Argentinian artist made me dream, I was amazed by his work. I kept lending his book over and over again. For one thing, the lady at the library thought I was crazy. I also had tons of late fees… it added up to 5$, which was a lot back then right?

books
Two versions of the book here, the french one has an intro by Pele. Epic.

Please visit his site, www.mordillo.com, he has tons of work including videos as well. I just wanted to share this for a moment, because to my surprise, not many people know of him… spread the love.

I dedicate this one to Rodrigo, Gian Carlos and Jonas. It’s not easy being a goal keeper:)

Week 18 by G.F.C.

Division B

No Comment on this game. Real Montreal were what they were. Danny scored 2 sweet goals, including one right of the kick off, from mid center. Beautiful. Laurent was grandiose today, 3 minutes before the final whistle, he headed in a sweet corner kick by Dan.

Oh yes, and the ball Ian let through his legs and into Dan’s way was ridiculous… epic.

Playoffs next week.

Week 17

Division B

A good challenge today, as RFC 2 faced close rivals FC Brossard. A fight to the finish, as playoffs are only one week away. The Ringleaders had a bumpy ride; a much experienced side, FC Brossard is a very physical side. They play body to body and let the elbows swing.

Unlike our previous match several weeks ago, we made it a point to score first. We needed to end the match before half time. The ball was up and down the field, with no team in real possession. The only thing RFC did better was put the ball in the net. After a splitting through ball from back central defender Nick, Joas exploded past 2 opponents and buried the goal giving no chance to the keeper.

As mentioned earlier, FC Brossard is not shy to show some muscle and get the nerves heated. The referee lost control of the match, which made the RFC regroup and struggle to keep focus. Ian has been on a constant intensity. After a throw inn attack to goal, Ian scrapped in front of the net showing much heart, as Jonas helped put the ball in the net and made it 2-1 at half time.

The whistle blew and Danny was quick to get our hopes up for the 3 points. Beating his markers he nailed a low shot past the keeper and made it 3-1. The celebration was short however, as FC Brossard earned a penalty shot, after Arcadio, in a heroic attempt to save a goal slid to clear the ball, which is illegal in most indoor league rules. The score was now 3-2.

Young guns mixed with the experienced… and in a humble way get the job done. Joas once again entered the referee’s score page of his little booklet as he beat the keeper for a 2nd time. RFC 2 wins 4-2.

Division C

A moment of history for RFC. A moment of truth as each player seeks for glory. Tied and fighting for a playoff spot, B-Town Select would not make it easy. Their advantage? We needed to beat them by 3 goals.

Heads up as pride flows through our veins. Tough start, The Ringleaders were a little short on the bench. The referee failed to see a handball from B-Town forward, but the goal was in. RFC fought, but 0-2 at half time made things unclear.

Style matters in martial arts, and so it does in football as well. In the beginning of the 2nd, Raj dribbled 3 B-Towners, blew past the last defense man and nailed it past the keeper. What a memorable way to score his very first goal for the RFC. Epic.

Fatigue and nervesnous settled in however. After many supporting attack runs by Bobby, Nick, Kevin and Paul, the Defense was comming to a halt, letting in 2 goals in less then 5 minutes. Max was large showing he still had something to fight for, making 2-4 with 10 minutes left. Hope dies last.

With only a few minutes left, we finally earned a penalty shot. Unusually, the quiet one wasn’t that quiet after all. Left back Paul stepped up and blasted one past the keeper, giving him no chance at all. Match ended 3-4 but RFC walked out with their heads high up.

Looking forward to next season…

Week 16

Division B

No excuses here, just facts. Moldova is quite a dirty team. “Nonchalant” as Ian said. Is it a a good quality to have? You know, pushing, shoving, punching, kicking, clipping… and getting away with it. It’s worked for Moldova throughout the season, so why should they change the way they play?

Frostbite Cup was fun, and exhausting, but as it says in the first paragraph, no excuses here just facts.

The RFC hit the pitch with only one thing in mind, to win. Moldova is an organized squad, with tough ball control and gutsy defending. Angelo admits the first goal they scored was his fault, since he left his man unmarked with plenty of time to shoot. Moldova hit a rocket left footed shot past Rodrigo. Until that moment of the first half, the game was even, as both teams had chances to score.

The Ringleaders didn’t give up. As said before kick off, the priority was for the defensive line to support the midfield and close the gap between the center. Dan, Jonas, Patterson and Ian touched many balls, creating opportunities for Danny upfront. Moldova’s defense had their hands full.

Moldova scored a scrappy 2nd goal. Once again, RFC was in trouble, 0-2.

Ian was outstanding today, as he was at Louis-Cyr during yesterday’s Frostbite Cup. Just three minutes before half time, Ian’s hard headed work ethic brought us closer to our objective, as he gracefully beat his defender and nailed the right side of the goal and past the Moldavian Keeper, just outside the box.

We had visions of victory during the half time break. A good speech by our MUCH missed Dr. Football and the plan was clear; let’s win this match.

Oh but wait, there’s a fella with a yellow jersey and a rusted whistle we forgot to mention… Mr. Referee.

Moldova had two major actions without heavy sanctions. During the first half, a player brought down Patterson and also punched him as he fell on top of him. The Moldovan then faked an ankle injury in order to prevent a booking. He only got a yellow, when it was clearly a red card.

Another incident that could of helped the RFC was a hand ball goal scored by Moldova. The player INTENTIONALLY scored with his hand, which was clearly a red card. The referee let it slip again.

Once again TOTAL CAMPO, if you’re reading this, our chances to make the playoffs are getting slimmer by the week. All we ask for is a chance for fair play. That’s all.

With the score line still at 2-1 in favor of Moldova, the RFC kept hitting hard; both Jonas and Danny hit the post. Dan also missed a great opportunity, breaking loose from his marker, as he hit the ball just over the crossbar.

Fatigue showed up however…

The match ended at 4-1. A final score we didn’t deserve, because we played good football. A notable mention here for Arcadio as he fought hard in the back. The squad is glad to see him on the pitch since he returned from a long halt serving a suspension. Laurent as well, he’s been solid for over 3 weeks now. Keep it up boys.

Week 15

Division B

After a week break, our beloved Ringleaders had a tough match up against Division B 3rd place team Atlas Lions. It’s the second time both clubs face each other this season. It’s always good football.

RFC 2 had good rhythm, executing the ball from the defensive line, all through the midfield. Danny had 2 men on him at all time, so it was difficult to get to him.

We lost focus for half a minute, which gave Atlas Lions the lead of 1-0 at half time.

The Ringleaders came out strong in the 2nd half, but with little luck; Danny hit a post, Jonas as well. Again, by trying to pressure the attack, two deadly mistakes in defense brought us down to 3-0.

A solid ball from Angelo way back targeted to Danny’s foot brought our hopes up, but with little time left, the match ended 3-1 for Atlas Lions.

Division C

Fatigue is a reality, but not in this case. With many RFCers playing both matches today, they gave it all they had, displaying a beautiful effort and a great representation of football.

Naz was definitely on his heels, as he gave good passes to his midfielders, and also scored his very first goal for The Ringleaders.

Nyala had revenge on their mind, since we beat them earlier on this season. They scored 3 straight goals, to make it 3-1 in their favor at half time.

Late comer Bart came out roaring in the 2nd half, helping Max score 2 goals in less than 5 minutes. Dan had assisted on the plays. We had hope of winning this match.

But… wait a minute here. If you remember the disastrous match versus FC Alianza last December, then you remember that awful referee. We had him again. He cost us the match, and maybe our playoff chances as well.

If anyone at Total Campo is reading this, please hear us out. The referee (don’t know his name, and don’t want to either) let ten handballs go loose, which one of them cost us a goal. He also let a ridiculous confusing situation of a throw in end up as Nyala’s 4th goal, which made us lose the game. Even Nyala players couldn’t believe it was a goal. We respect and support your organization, but for the love of the game, please get rid of this awful referee.

Week 11

Division C

The RFC looked confident, blessing the pitch once again. With the league playoffs right around the corner, every match, every point counts.

Vincent Tsang is definitely improving as the weeks go by, and today was no exception. A relentless effort in the midfield brought much inspiration to the team.

It’s also worth a mention as defensive center back and captain Nick saved a goal on the line, clearing the ball at the very last second.

The dynamic Trepanier duo impressed once again, as a one-two play found Jonas all alone on the opposite side. RFC won 1-0.

Division B

In much frustration, and after many weeks, we still haven’t got over this loss. We’ve played much better football because we’ve proved it to ourselves. Or maybe College Lasalle wanted it more than us. The match ended 3-1 in their favor.

Please note that the referee awarded a questionable penalty shot that cost us the match. Then again, this will sound like an excuse. It’s not an excuse was you’re on the pitch, sweating, bleeding, battered and bruised, exhausted as your lungs are punching through your chest gasping for air.

Week 8

Division C

It’s been the coldest December in 28 years. January will be no different. Bad referees, handballs, illegal tackles, injuries, goal posts are part of the game. Short of players? Snow storms? It’s all part of the game now.

Ready to start 2010 and forget 2009. The Ringleaders are receptive, focused and determined. Our Captain Nick led the defense, backed up by Kevin and Paul 107. Jonas played in goal.

We played intense football, as MTL-FC was short of subs, their weary legs couldn’t hold up for the 2nd half. To their surprise, once again reunited, the Trepanier brothers (Jeremie and Joas) played a superb match.

After missing many chances to score, including a volley shot by Jano Arabaghian, Jeremie found Joas on 2 occasions which ended with a goal. With only 5 minutes left, The RFC brought home the 3 points needed and moved up on the league table.

Division B
Another tough fixture in week 8 as RFC 2 faced Sabbah, one of the form teams of Division B, and with a couple of key players still away on vacation.  It was good to see that Joas made a quick recovery from last weeks injury scare and was back on the pitch.
Sabbah are a strong well organised team and it was always going to be hard to break them down.  Everyone worked hard in the first half putting in a good performance and this was rewarded by a magical Danny Pexis goal from nothing to keep us in the game.  No-one on the whole pitch anticipated Danny’s over the shoulder volley into the far corner, it was beautiful.
Unfortunately, in the second half tiredness set in and cohesion waned, and Sabbah continued their relentless pressing game.  The effort was there but we were unable to develop any quality possession with the ball and we lost another close game 2-1.

This week’s match programme was designed by Luca. Since joining The Ringleaders, The one known as “Weird Beard” has blessed us with his wisdom in many ways. The latine quote on the graphic means “Out Of Many One”.

The quote explaining the meaning of the phrase was written on ancient stone in Mesopotamia 3,000 years ago: “Well, It’s because were ALL different… but were ONE team… with the SAME love for football…” Some say God entered Luca’s body while he made this epic masterpiece.
