A Package…
Since Jessica moved to New York this past Spring, we miss here more than she misses us. Every time I talk to her on BBIM, she’s either playing soccer, watching soccer, or being in the presence of legends such as Pele. Jess is living a revolution live and direct. It’s no secret, soccer in North America is growing large these days. Unlike the major fail of the 70’s and early 80’s NASL movement, this time around, the industry is much more healthy and structured. The roots are deep and there’s no doubt here; IT’S GOING TO WORK.
Growing up, the first book I read was about Pele. You know, I mean a thick, bulky brick at the age of 8 or 9. The one you celebrate once you’ve finished reading. I don’t recall the exact title, but it changed my life forever. And of course, I grew much interest for the New York Cosmos.
Funny enough, I went to see a MLS game a few years ago, between New York Redbulls and Real Salt Lake. I was more fascinated about being at Giants Stadium than anything else. The fact that the Cosmos played there, thinking about that unique line up of mega stars blessing that very pitch… man… the whole experience brought shivers all over my body!!!
Well, much love and respect to Jessica for sending this package over. A sweet t-shirt, stickers (I’ll bring some to tomorrow’s game boys!!!), and 2 lovely pins (I’ma keep those for me mofos!!!).
New York Cosmos? Don’t change a thing. Don’t change the logo, don’t change the colors, keep the story and heritage intact. Good luck, God bless you and thank you for turning this incredible vault of memories into real life again!!!

The Gold Rush 2010
You nailed this one Johnny, good job!!! I’m still mad at you for not showing up on Tuesday pick up. Man, we haven’t seen you since the indoor season. He he he…
What is THE GOLD RUSH 2010? Well, it’s the name of our summer season campaign. You see, starting this season and from now on, every season will have a new slogan. Why? Because the family is growing, the objectives are growing, the players are growing, the ideas are growing, the love for the sport is growing, everything is growing. Hummel provided some beautiful uniforms for The Ringleaders and the name came from the golden chevrons along side the jersey and shorts. Also cause Red Dead Redemption came out and I’m kind of obsessed with the show Deadwood. With soccer being the fastest growing sport in North America, lot’s of people are jumping on the bandwagon. So beware of all the phonies, and keep it real. Love this sport with all your heart and don’t let no one take it away from you.

African Arenas
Just in time for the World Cup, there is a new photobook available called African Arenas by Thomas Hoeffgen, a german Photographer. It was a personal project for him that took 10 years to complete – and the results are very impressive. It appears to do justice in capturing the passion that the continent has for football. He visited several countries over 7 trips to find the right angles and timing to shoot the 85 images and stories that fill the pages of his book. Covering makeshift goalposts on flat pieces of land to concrete stadiums, all kinds of arenas are showcased.
The book can be ordered here.
Looking forward to getting my hands on this!

Red Bull Street Style World Final 2010 kicking up
Over 5,000 people competed in 221 regional finals around the world to whittle it down to 60 of the world’s best freestylers. They are all in Cape Town, South Africa, for the World Final of Red Bull Street Style, which takes place starting now until Wednesday (April 26-28th).
Their final training session was held on the top of the Lion’s Head with a breathtaking panoramic view of South Africa. Lose control of the ball and it could plummet 669 meters to sea level. Edgar Davids, who’s in town with George Weah to crown the champ on Wednesday, had this to say: “I have been observing the sport for quite a few years now. The level here is just incredible – we can look forward to some amazing tricks over the next few days. These guys are capable of doing things with a football that seem to defy the laws of gravity. Any footballer would love to be able to pull off these tricks.”
Stay tuned to Red Bull Street Style to see which of the 60 ballers advance to the top 16 battle taking place at Cape Town’s Grand Parade on Wednesday. Good luck to Canadian finalist Magnet!

New Balance in soccer (1976-1986)
Nostalgia is addiction to some, a business to others. Here’s a book called “Enduring Performance: The New Balance Story.” A splendid 265 page brick about shoe and sole history.
“In the meantime, the NB Workington plant, responding to local interests, began to manufacture football boots (soccer shoes). For two two years, members of the Professional Footballers Association (P.F.A.) wear-tested the product. Then, in 1982 the P.F.A., with membership of 3,000 professional and semi-professional players, held a press conference in Manchester at which it announced its independent endorsement of the New Balance boot. Such an unpaid endorsement was unprecedented. With it came the P.F.A.’s granting New Balance U.K. the right to use its logo on the boots, boxes, advertising and promotional materials.”

Bryan Robson, English National Soccer Team Captain, collaborates with New Balance to design a series of high performance soccer shoes.

1985
The year 1981 brought agreements with manufacturer-distributors in Brazil and Argentina. The only international brand with a presence in South America, New Balance had no competition for a time.

Christmas time in the trenches
The trenches were elaborate and heavily fortified rows of open tunnels, most commonly used on the battlefields of World War I. Armies could spend weeks, even months, in these dirt trenches, constantly vigilant of the danger lying on the other side.
On Christmas day, 1914, there was a ceasefire. Some eyewitness accounts say that German and British troops started to sing Christmas carols. They then met on no man’s land, the dangerous barren zone that separated the trenches, to exchange cigarettes, alcohol and chocolate. One soldier took out a soccer ball and the rest was history. United by the sport, soldiers forgot they were with the men they were trying to kill hours before.
The holidays were a time for togetherness and sharing, but with consumerism and materialism taking over the North American lifestyle, we find ourselves forgetting the true spirit of Christmas. This attitude has even crossed over to the world of Football. What was once “the poor man’s sport” has now become a prestigious, billion dollar business. Advertisements have taken over the sidelines and find themselves plastered across the jerseys of our favourite players. True fans can barely get decent seats, yet alone afford tickets to see their favourite team play. Hopefully the Christmas ceasefire will remind us what the sport is really about.

Hans van der Meer Awesomeness!
Hans van der Meer is a 54-year-old photographer living in Amsterdam.
Ten years ago he shot lower league soccer matches in fields across Europe.
The photographs are ridiculous. The site, not so much.
Spend an hour screen-shooting his site here.
Read his bio here.
Buy his books here and here.
And send them to me here.
