Week 4

Division C

Only RFC were given a run out in week four, with a gap in the fixture list for RFC 2. And after two defeats in a row everyone knew that today was going to be our biggest game so far. We faced Nyala, who also happened to be on the same points and goal difference as us in the table. As I said, today was going to be a big one and Nyala weren’t going to give in easily.

Halfway through the game I welled up, tears filled my eyes, we’re destroying them I muttered to myself, it was beautiful. But the score was still 1-1. After all our intricate passing and movement we were still not taking home all the points and could still lose the game. We continued to press, the midfield partnership of Max and Thanassi was devastating (combining beautifully for our first) and Jano put in a superb performance, causing trouble up front then helping to solidify the back after an injury forced a reshuffle. But still the score remained at 1-1.

Then the unthinkable happened, a lapse of concentration. The only mistake our defense made in the second half, but it left one of the Nyala players unmarked on the back post, and inevitably the ball found its way to him. I saw it all in slow motion, ‘these Nyala boys are all from the army they take every chance they can get’ was going through my head, and as this lone man on the far post stood waiting for his chance, Rod threw himself across the goal, which may have just been enough to put the player off who quickly blazed the ball a foot over the crossbar. We were still alive. Surely now there was only to be one outcome of the game.

We created a few half chances but failed to take advantage. We piled on the pressure and with just five minutes to go Max stepped up and snapped an exquisite first timer into the bottom corner of their goal. We finally had the lead. Everyone was tired but we closed the game out comfortably and took the much coveted three points and the confidence. We were alive and fighting again.
